Review of The Cook, the Thief, His Wife & Her Lover (1989) by Zeeshan M — 27 Aug 2007
Extremely stylish, genuinely clever and complex film. The only problem is that it's quite revolting. Ethics are my central concern and this film has none. Amoralists will be more impressed. It's multi-metaphorical value (Anti-thatcherism, parallels with christianity) didn't engage me.
Greenaway's technical bravura and exceptional intelligence really count for very little here for his amoralist approach.
