Review of The Cook, the Thief, His Wife & Her Lover (1989) by James J — 03 Jun 2008
Simply astonishing. This is one of the darkest comedies I have ever seen, and one of the most difficult things I have ever watched... but it just hooks you in and doesn't let go. The characters are brilliant.
The scenic design and use of colors and symbolism and score; all brilliant, each part integral to understanding its master. And while this doesn't have much of a plot, what everything builds up to will just blow your mind.
I can't stop thinking about this film since I finished watching it. Giving it a perfect score because it's so bold and so different in practically everything it tries to do, and a film hasn't impacted me this greatly in a long while, if ever.
Absolutely go see it, if you're able to stomach it. And if you're not, see it anyway if you're looking for a landmark film.
