Review of The Cook, the Thief, His Wife & Her Lover (1989) by Randy P — 23 Aug 2008
Totally a visceral experience. Every aspect of the film works together simultaneously to stimulate all of the viewer's senses. It's a little slow, but when the plot stops moving, you get all that much more time to take in the lush sets and costumes, or stop for a second and listen to the deliberate score, or take in any other of the films excellent qualities.
It's not for everyone, and if you hate it, that's fine, really, because there are some iffy moments of rape, violence, bigotry, explicit sex, and *SPOILER ALERT* cannibalism. Even if it wasn't a really great film, it has copious amounts of naked Helen Mirren, so really, it was destined for at least three stars.
Not for everyone, but definitely worth a look. NOTE: This film is not available on Region 1 DVD so it can be a little difficult to come by.
