Review of The Cook, the Thief, His Wife & Her Lover (1989) by Travis J — 11 Oct 2008
For a brief moment, I considered revising my current belief that the cinematic arts in indeed dead and rotting in a shallow grave under Hollywood's floorboards as talking, computer generated spartan-robots utter neoconservative propaganda and other subversive slogans amidst explosions larger than Hiroshima do their utmst to take their place as if nothing happened.
.. Or worse, the stagnant concept that art and film has to accompany a museum retrospective and a 700 page book explaining the artist's intentions... either way, both are apt indications of the presumptive death rattle of a once sterling media.
.. sorry tangent. What I was trying to say befoe I got poetic was that I was pretty fucking impressed with nearly every aspect of this film and lauded its overall artistic cohesion ad nauseum... Then I realized that this film was made nearly twenty years ago, leaving me to yet again return to my current stance that modern cinema is slowly being eaten by maggots like that turtle in the Exploratorium.
