Review of The Conversation (1974) by Ld P — 17 Aug 2009
The Conversation (1974) I saw this movie on the big screen a couple of times when I came out. I also saw it on DVD. I am audiophile for many years (yes even in 1974) so this audio thriller has always intrigued me.
This is dynamite film making and way ahead of its time for 1974, I have seen a few bad review of the movie and literally it takes a certain level of intellect and intent screen watching and listening to get this movie.
This is really a 70s version of Antonelli's Blow up but with an audio and video slant rather than the pure visual point of view. Francis Ford Coppola wrote and directed this. Harry Caul- the protagonist cannot believe what he is seeing and hearing (or can he??).
Gene Hackman the technocrat is fantastic! This film was nominated for many many awards but won for none. It certainly was one of the best films of 1974 and well worth seeing again today. five stars one of my all time favorite films.
