Review of The Constant Gardener (2005) by Rachel B — 23 Jul 2009
'Love at any cost' the tagline reads through the epic african skyline. This film was critically acclaimed and received well when it was released. I sat down to watch this expecting a dark thriller and it some ways that is what I got but it wasnt as I expected.
The DVD box boasts helicopters, explosions, guns and it was called a 'spy thriller' from the critic on the box. It was beautifully acted, I wouldnt expect anything less from ralph fiennes who is fantastic as always and rachel weiz is also very good.
The problem with the film is that its very unevenly paced, the script is sadly predictable much more so than I was expecting. There isnt any real 'thrilling' moments, apart from the camp raid scene.
The biggest problem is the editing and directing, the loose free roming camera work, works in places but much of the time seems un-even and takes away from the scenes, one scene in particular in a resteraunt where an important conversation is happening.
..the camera man seems to lose interest and wonder off. All in all, its still a well crafted piece of acting work for the leads, but isn't very inspiring and doesn't have the emotional impact it needed.
