Review of The Conqueror (1956) by Cha T — 14 Oct 2008
The apparent back story here is that director Dick Powell was about to throw this script in the trash when John Wayne stopped by his office. Dick was called out briefly and when he returned the Duke was exclaiming that he wanted to make this movie. As Powell put it, "how do you say no to the Duke?" How indeed?
Conversely, how could anyone involved in this production sit with a straight face as John Wayne plays Ghengis Khan? Equally absurd are Susan Hayward as the bride he pilfered and the further cast of Hispanics and Caucasians that are supposed to be Eurasian mongols. Add to that the Star Trek-like sets, costumes and dancing girls and you've got the makings of quite a comedy.
The only thing that could have made this production funnier is if somehow you could have incorporated Harvey Keitel's Judas into the mix.
