Review of The Conformist (1971) by Linda K — 08 Dec 2007
A portrait of the essential fascist, played by Jean-Louis Trintignan. Images of the Mussolini state apparatus that dwarfs humans; demonization of intellectuals; the conforming middle class as accommodating cowards. Lyrical and poetic. The sequence where Trintignan visits his father is heart-breakking and a lesson in politics.
The credits cited in Flixter don't include Dominique Sanda--the sequence in which she does the tango with Stefania Sandrelli is a hint of what's to come in Last Tango in Paris.
