Review of The Conformist (1971) by Ben R — 19 Apr 2008
Visually impressive and well-crafted film that unfortunately chooses as its subject a weak-willed and psychologically damaged young man who wants so desperately to be like everyone around him that he'll do anything for acceptance.
It's difficult finding sympathy for this character, and therefore difficult to gain much interest in the story. Some scenes are undeniably powerful, others border on pretentious artsy nonsense.
