Review of The Conformist (1971) by Natalie M — 19 Aug 2012
I struggled through alternative language/subtitle options. The English track (accented) was execrable. I opted for the unsynced Italian. At least it felt truer to the sense of the movie, if not the actors.
Unfortunately, Trintignant doesn't convince as an unconvinced fascist, and his shallow failings of morality and romance are of only passing interest. The first half of the movie - devoted to scene-setting and character exploration, and building a little in terms of ultimate motivations - is dull.
I think the original Moravia novel must have been much better in pacing.
