Review of The Conformist (1971) by Elgan D — 19 Jan 2013
The story of a coward Italian Fascist spy in the 30s who, in order to please his government, agrees to kill his former college mentor in Paris, where he goes on honeymoon with his newlywed bride, and meets his wife with whom he becomes fascinated.
Bertolucci won international acclaim with this masterful work of cinematography which makes the film look beautiful, while the wonderful sets comply almost metaphorically to the intricate psychological undertones that run throughout the film.
Trintignant in the leading role of the weaselly man dying to fit in delivers a perfectly defined performance.
