Review of The Company of Wolves (1984) by Ian M — 03 Nov 2009
When my friends invited me over to watch Angela Lansbury in a horror version of "Little Red Riding Hood," I thought, "That sounds AWESOME!" Wow, the film makers found a way to screw that up! I'm convinced Angela must have had some huge gambling debts at the time, because otherwise I have no idea why she would agree to do this.
It is such a mess! There are dreams with flashbacks, and stories within stories. There are so many silly attempts at symbolism that it feels more like a senior thesis in film school than it does a professional theatrical release starring a multi-tony winning actress.
And the "wolves" are just big dogs that are probably chasing Red Riding Hood so they can lick her face. This movie also will make you glad we live in a time when waxing is available to most people.
Leonard Maltin says this movie is silly, slow moving and unsatisfying. I think he gave it too much credit.
