Review of The Color Purple (1985) by Calvin C — 03 Sep 2012
It took me a while, but I finally got to watching this. The film is famous for being nominated for 11 Oscars and not winning a single one ( a record). That is a shame, because there is some great acting from Danny Glover and Margaret Avery. It is also a film with two of the most convincing and breakout performances from first timers Whoopi Goldberg and Oprah Winfrey. This is a sad, depressing story that Steven Spielberg carefully directs with his artistic talent. But the fact that this film didn't even win at least one Oscar is the real tragedy.
Grade: A-.
