Review of The Collection (2012) by Jon W — 01 Aug 2013
It's altogether a pretty pointless exercise in sadism, not gleefully gory enough to be Evil Dead and not energetic and logical enough to be, say, Aliens. Instead, we see people killed in increasingly unsuspenseful ways where the shocks are about as predictable as who will die.
There's very little suspense throughout as it moves from one gore trap to the next. Sure, it's bound to be fun for fans of the first movie, but as I didn't watch the first one, I was instead left with horror movie purgatory where it's not particularly scary to satisfy my roller coaster fear-like craving nor was it creative enough in its gore to even get a creative nod from me.
Instead, it mows through such setups as a booby-trapped dancefloor and the lair in an abandoned hotel as if they were extra gallons of blood. The sets aren't explored well enough to give us a sense of where everything is, and even the booby traps feel like leftovers.
I only give this two stars as the two leads, Emma Fitzpatrick and Josh Stewart, create believable characters when the script begs for much less. Nice try, but the overall movie was too lazy for horror fans to even enjoy on a rainy Friday night.
