Review of Verotika (2019) by Imthenoob — 28 Feb 2020
This anthology horror film is Danzig's directorial debut and I'm sorry to say that is an utter mess that screams "an amateur production". The film is very poorly edited and by poorly, I mean not edited at all. It seems like they shot the bare minimum of scenes in order to hit that 90 minute run time and they had to use every bit of it. There are many scenes with the characters just standing around, looking directly at the camera and not doing a single thing. Just staring for a few seconds and then the scene kind of awkwardly continues. I honestly thought that my stream had frozen because it happened so often.
And don't even get me started on the acting, which is even worst than the editing. In the first story of this anthology, The cast doesn't just act poorly but their accents are so thick that you can barely understand what they are saying. It made the film rough to watch, let alone actually finish it.
Now not all is a total wash, Danzig actually does a pretty decent job with the gore. Some scenes, like the spider's transition from claymation to live-action, were pretty cool but they were too far and in-between. There wasn't enough of those cool, interesting shots to really make this film worthwhile. And Danzig picks a lot of weird camera angles to shoot from and it just looks bad at times.
Overall, Verotika is an absolute mess. There is nothing really positive to say about it. Only the die-hard Danzig fans, such as myself, will bother checking it out. Everyone else should just ignore it.
