Review of The Circus (1928) by I Don't Know W — 28 Apr 2011
This movie is outstanding. When I watch a Charlie Chaplin movie, I watch out for 2 main things: Story and Comedy. For example, The Great Dictator had a great story but lacked much comedy, Modern Times was hilarious but the story was a little lacking, and The Gold Rush and City Lights did those two perfectly, and so does this movie.
Many scenes stick out, and they're always funny and/or dramatic. The acting is wonderful, the characters are likable, nothing is lacking. It's fun all the way, nothing confusing, no gimmicks (Which, believe it or not, was used in movies back then, like in The General, where Buster Keaton shows off his athleticism by being hit by a train constantly), it's just a movie where you can just enjoy it's jokes and it's story.
One more thing I'd like to discuss is the ending. *SPOILER* Most of Charlie Chaplin's movie that involve a romance end with Chaplin getting the girl, but in this, he gives the girl to the person he DESPISED for most of the movie.
It's not bad, but it's weird because he could've had her all to himself. *END OF SPOILER* Sure it's comedy is not up to par with some of Chaplin's other films, but it's still outstanding.
