Review of The Circle (2017) by Lucy K — 15 Jul 2017
Such a promising cast, playing one-dimensional characters whose ideas and motivations are never explained. We are expected simply to accept that a seemingly pleasant and intelligent girl is unable to see the point of privacy or intimacy, wanting to place every person in the world in a virtual zoo.
The music, dialogue and tone of the film is sickly sweet, super-duper-fake 'shiny happy people', to the point of being totally cringeworthy, and though there is a hint of something darker and more interesting with John Boyega's character, it never develops into something more.
The creators of this film could do with taking a leaf out of Charlie Brooker's book; this is a poor imitation of the futuristic cynicism captured in the world of Black Mirror.
