Review of The Cider House Rules (1999) by Gary E — 12 Jan 2008
A better than average film that has some moral lessons. The whole right or wrong of the abortion issues is viewed. But since the physician is practicing illegally (ether addict), his protege has no medical school training and they are doing illegal abortions, I see no reason to say that this film is working in a world of reality. It is nice to be benevolent physician helping people, but not very realistic. Michael Caine was a wonderful performer in this film.
The film loses its appeal by promoting illegal and harmful practices, in a social sense and in the professional medical sense.
Is Homer fated to come full circle in his kindhearted journey? It's left to the viewer to decide. The answer is YES!! Homer went on to become SpiderMan, continuing the practice of doing good!!!
A very nice movie to watch in a quiet moment. No violence, no sex, just good clean fun.
