Review of The Cider House Rules (1999) by Sapphire G — 01 Mar 2010
This movie is an authentic mess. It deviates from one subject to another, and introduces them with such clumsiness that it almost hurts to think that the story could have been so intense and emotionally charged. Tobey Maguire almost made me go nuts: (with a wide, polite, annoyingly sweet smile) "Mr Rose...are you sleeping with your daughter?" Oh-my-God! Where's his outrage, his shock, any normal person's reaction? Was the character supposed to be that idiotic or is that just him? This was so bad I couldn't even feel sad enough for the girl, I was too immersed in Tobey's *curious* inner world.
Besides, this high point of the movie was, again, introduced awkwardly and WAY too late in the story, to no effect.
I've seen far worse movies which I've rated with 2 stars of course, but this one bothered me because it could have been developed so much better and it wasn't.
