Review of The Chronicles of Riddick (2004) by Dov D — 23 Sep 2013
David Twohy's The Chronicles Of Riddick is the prime example of a sequel gone horribly, horribly wrong. This film has next to nothing to do with the first. Literally the only similarities are three characters and.
.. well, that's it. The planet the entire first film takes place on and the signature creatures that made it what it is aren't even mentioned. Maybe it was co-director Alexa Davalos's input or maybe it was just a poorly conceived idea, but whatever the case, this movie goes in such a different direction from the first that calling it a sequel is a stretch.
The epic world that The Chronicles Of Riddick attempts to create, which is usually something I fall in love with, falls flat and lifeless. The acting is on par with the first, which isn't necessarily a good thing, and the effects are much worse.
Bottom line, this movie takes the horror element that made the first so enticing and removes it, leaving the hollow shell of an action/adventure film. I'd recommend this if you've seen the first one, but other than that, don't bother.
