Review of The Call of Cthulhu (2006) by Andrew B — 17 Jul 2008
"Call of Cthulhu" is a technically intriguing film which presents a faithful translation of H.P. Lovecraft's short story. The silent film is a refreshing novelty which is shot with great attention to lighting, contributing to the overall ambience.
This film's flaws, however, also are closely tied with its sylized presentation. The story is overdependant on narrative text cards which are not well written. Otherwise, the main fault of this film is that its source material is no longer as compelling or horrific as it might have been more than fifty years ago.
Despite these faults, "Cthulhu" is an ably handled, original concept which fans of the source material will enjoy.
