Review of The Call of Cthulhu (2006) by Heather M — 19 Oct 2008
Looked at in one way, this movie is, despite its rock-bottom budget, the best adaptation of HP Lovecraft I've ever seen. Filming in the style of a 1920's silent movie was not just a cost-cutting measure but also an amazingly effective artistic choice, and with just a little suspension of disbelief, you could find yourself in an alternate universe in which Lovecraft's story had been adapted a few years after he wrote it.
Look at it in another way, and it's a tribute to the power and majesty of unbridled nerdery. How on earth did a group of fans who happened to have some of the right skills pull this off? What made them spend years of their lives on a project so ambitiously ridiculous? The answer is in the HP Lovecraft Historical Society's motto: "Ludo Fore Putavimus," or, "We Thought It Would Be Fun.".
