Review of The Call of Cthulhu (2006) by Alex F — 28 Aug 2009
Very nice silent film, made in 2005! Then again, Lovecraft's original short story has been called unfilmable, so this kind of approach was really only way to do it. So is it unfilmable then? I guess not =).
Nice atmosphere and tension runs through whole movie, and the length is nicely short, too. And it does feel like it could have been made during the silent era.
If I have to nitpick, I think that some of the characters are underdeveloped (there wasn't much to begin with in short story), and for film made to feel like 20-30's, it does have some modern camera moves, sometimes too sharp images, and some obvious cgi/green screen stuff.
But all in all, best Lovecraft film I've seen, and really nice film experiment from the makers. And I think that Call of Cthulhu could work as "normal" movie too. So, Guillermo Del Toro, are you listening?
