Review of The Call of Cthulhu (2006) by Johannes J — 15 Feb 2014
This film has the very clever conceit of filming the H.P. Lovecraft story as if it had ben make during the time Lovecraft wrote his story, filming it as a silent film with heavy influences from there German expressionist films of the era.
It's been a long time since I've read this story, but it definitely feels like a Lovecraft tale, unfolding in flashbacks told through journals, diaries, newspaper articles and multiple narrators.
The film also manages to create Lovecraft's sense of drewd that pervaded his best stories by doing a fine job of aping films like "The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari." Although I enjoyed this film quite a bit, I think there probably a pretty narrow band of people who are it's target audience.
If you're a Lovecraft fan and also a fan of silent film, this film is a must see!
