Review of The Butler (2013) by Paul K — 07 May 2014
Forest Whitaker is at the heart of this movie, and does a good job. However, Robin Williams as Eisenhower was very weird. John Cusack made a credible Nixon and Alan Rickman was unrecognisable (as Rickman) playing Reagan.
Oprah Winfrey was actually pretty good in this, and the view of history which the film put forward was interesting; but overall there was a discrepancy between that historic sweep and the personal story of Cecil Gaines and his family.
On one level it works, but at the visceral level it fails to grab attention.
