Review of The Business of Being Born (2008) by Rebekah S — 10 Sep 2009
Don't expect this documentary to be comprehensive or clinically perfectly "balanced" on the subject, but it does begin to fill an information void and dispels some of the myths of an era in which pregnancy has been treated by medical professionals more like a disease to be survived than a journey to be embraced.
This documentary is a personal journey in which the producers & director even share the intimacy of their own birthing processes with great vulnerability (hiding nothing--ie. the squeamish would consider some footage very graphic).
Recommended for those with the maturity to watch the beauty of birth, especially if they're interested in exploring alternatives to hospital birthing. (Which I personally recommend, having delivered my last child via water birth at a birthing center).
