Review of The Business of Being Born (2008) by David S — 30 Jan 2011
Activist documentary that explores home birth, its advantages, and its proponents. While it is fair to say that it is selective with information, it does however present the side that is not well-represented.
For the most part, the problems with birth in a hospital in the U.S. seem to echo all of the current U.S. healthcare problems, namely the encroach of greed, cost-cutting fervor, over-reliance on costly procedures, and dehumanizing processes into something that should instead be a celebration of life.
It is a little biased and does give you everything you need to know, so this documentary should be seen as a starting point for learning more. The target audience is the vast majority of us who, not having looked it up, might assume there's nothing wrong with our infant mortality rates or our tendency to opt for C-section.
