Review of The Boys from Brazil (1978) by Jeff D — 01 Mar 2008
Unlike villainous greats like Peter Cushing, Vincent Price and Christopher Lee, the aged all-star cast "from Brazil" is simply too old and unconvincing. James Mason's distinct voice can't be hidden by an accent (though I'm not sure he's really trying), Gregory Peck is certainly evil but will never shake off 30+ years of type-casting as good guys, and Laurence Olivier comes across too feeble to be heroic.
Schaffner's slow pacing doesn't quite work, nor Jerry Goldsmith's upbeat theme (though his brooding militaristic motif is quite effective). Overall, given the stellar talent, this is quite a disappointment.
