Review of The Boys Are Back (2009) by Siobhan G — 08 Nov 2009
With The Boys Are Back, Scott Hicks avoids the sentimentality that has afflicted most of his post-Shine films. Unfortunately, he's also avoided developing any real drama.
The film rests unfairly on the reliable shoulders of Clive Owen, with the other characters either being annoying (that damn younger son of his) or underdeveloped (poor Emma Booth).
Gorgeous scenery, a little too distractingly picture perfect in fact, and inspired use of Sigur Ros early on in the soundtrack, are plusses, as well as seeing the fabulous Julia Blake, but this falls well short of being a compelling story.
