Review of The Boy (2016) by James R — 14 May 2016
Not a particularly good film here. I needed a palette cleanser and thought...hey this has been in my queue for a couple years let's check it out. Well it's about what I expected. The Boy is about a young American woman named Greta (Lauren Cohan) who comes to England to help an elderly couple.
The thing is the elderly couple have a strange situation where they take care of a porcelain doll believing it to be their son. Their real son died 20 years ago in a fire, but they believe this doll to be their actual son still.
Great sort of just agrees and decides to go along with this. When the couple leaves for their holiday Great throws the doll in a room and just goes along with her days getting paid handsomely for just chilling.
Soon enough though Greta begins noticing the doll not staying put and moving around and showing up in different areas. Greta begins to question whether or not there's a spirit in the house, or something more sinister.
You can get that plot from basically the trailer, so this is a light explanation of the film. The movie's main plot moves incredibly slow with nothing really happening for the first 50 minutes of the movie.
There's also a subplot involving Greta's past and her abusive ex boyfriend, but truthfully it doesn't add to anything, nor does it actually really come full circle. I will say the "twist" to this one was actually pretty creepy and I did not see it coming, so that was one of the positives of this movie.
I also enjoyed Cohan's performance. Just like in The Walking Dead she's always one of the more likeable people and I appreciated that she worked with what she got here. Overall, it's only worth a look if you're absolutely out of horror films to watch (kinda like me) and you think you might enjoy it.
It's a rent at the very very least, but for most people steer clear of this one.
