Review of The Book of Henry (2017) by Max M — 24 Sep 2017
A stunning and captivating movie. Definitely not for younger viewers, as there is a lot of death. There isn't anything graphic, but undeniably a lot of emotion and sadness. Many would find this too depressing to finish.
But, if you look past the sadness, you find an emotional story about a child genius and his touching relationships with his mother and little brother. If you are considering seeing this movie, I highly recommend as it is a must see.
But for those who don't like sad films, this isn't the one for you. The story is great. Many reviews tell you that they are juggling multiple plotlines, but they all feed into each other nicely, and revolve around a main idea.
REALLY IMPORTANT: The only part that made me second guess about watching it, was the fact that the plot revolves around trying to kill their next door neighbor on account of he is sexually abusing his step daughter.
Though, while I watched the movie, I realized that it never specifies his actions, and could be assumed as him just hitting her, because they only mention the girl having depression and bruises around the face.
This is necessary for the plot to unfold though, as the step father is the police chief, and accusing him of abusing wouldn't be taken seriously, as it sounds absurd. The family decides the only way is to expertly kill him, all the while covering their tracks.
This is all done in the interest of the young girl. All in all, a phenomenal movie. Great story, just maybe not for the light hearted or children under the age of 12. Even mature children will have a hard time with the death element, as it becomes very emotional.
I would seriously recommend though. One of my favorites so far. Great film, and great ideas altogether. If you're still on the fence, I recommend you watch it for yourself, the ending makes it all worthwhile.
Happy watching!
