Review of The Blues Brothers (1980) by Ben C — 31 Mar 2013
It was one of the gems that I literally grew up with. I never saw the comedy sketches but seeing this movie somewhat wants me to do so. This movie was what propelled John Landis' career as a director, in my opinion.
The main characters, Jake and Elwood, have put their hearts on their sleeves in this movie, defying as many obstacles as they can in an attempt to save their orphanage they grew up in, which Elwood constantly mentions that they're 'on a mission from God', although it seems that everyone who is not involved in the band wants to capture them: The police, Jake's former lover (played by Carrie Fisher, known for her prescence as Leia in the original Star Wars trilogy), the Illinois Nazis, and even a music group that call themselves 'The Good 'Ol Boys'.
The main flaw with this movie is that it has some car chases merely to pad out the movie, and some that aren't. A good example of this is the multiple car pile-up and The Blues Brothers trying to escape the INs in one of the most unusual ways ever seen.
With that flaw aside, I'd say it's a movie worth watching for the necessary two hours.
