Review of The Blob (1988) by Elizabeth T — 03 Dec 2008
This movie is pure nostalgia for me. It was when movies were made to be entertaining all around. This one's about great effects (even today), creeping you out and having just enough laughs for it to not be campy.
Movies are hardly about that anymore. Chuck Russell had motivation in his movies in those days. He's lazy now. Remakes were made at this point because they could top their predecessors. Now they're made for quick cash.
All the actors in this one are there because they want to be (and do excellent jobs), as opposed to actors today who want publicity. This is a perfect example of a time when effort was put into a film by all involved.
Cheesy as it is, it's better than 95% of movies made today and I will forever hail it as an instant classic. Forget the Steve McQueen version, this is THE Blob film for me.
