Review of The Blob (1988) by Al M — 11 Feb 2011
I saw this movie once but it was a long time ago... I only remembered the part at the beginning where the bum pokes the blob. I really wanted to watch it again sometimes, so that's what I did tonight.
It is far less frightening than I thought although the suspense is good at times. This movie starts off as your typical 80's horror flick : horny jocks, cheerleaders (the leading one being played by Shawnee Smith, known for her roles in the Saw movies), the usual tough teenager, and the local policemen are as incompetent as they can be.
About everything about this movie was unintentionally funny... this was gonna RULE ! ... until halfway through, when it veered and became action-oriented, with a conspiracy theory, the special forces joining in and, quite surprisingly, lots of well-made special effects.
It really ruined the whole spirit of the movie. Moreover, since this movie is a remake, it can't get credit for the general concept. I will, of course, watch the original as soon as possible to get a better grasp of the original.
