Review of The Blob (1988) by Julian T — 31 Dec 2011
I saw this movie when I was 12, and at the time, it might have scared me more than any other movie I had ever seen. I remember laying in bed after watching it, unable to close my eyes for fear the Blob was crawling out of our bathroom sink.
Watching it again years later, it is still pretty damn creepy, with some seriously disturbing scenes and imagery. (The doctors office scene and the down the drain scene spring to mind) It is written pretty effectively, and the cast of mostly unknown actors do a solid job.
The creature is a huge upgrade from the original, which was seriously a plastic bag full of red jello. That said, there are still some hokey effects present, as it is a mid-budget 80's horror movie afterall.
Definetly breaks the mold of who lives/dies, and has some interesting subtext, including government paranoia, the Cold War, and even date rape. A creepy, unconventional horror movie that continues to be an underrated movie.
