Review of The Blob (1958) by Jeff Q — 04 Nov 2009
The hybrid sci-fi-horror is my favorite micro genre and I guess it?s important to give props to some of the early entries like The Blob. The film is light on the sci-fi and light on the horror and for the most part follows those darn kids trying to get the adults to believe that the blob exists. So like most B-horrors we get stereotyped characters, corny dialogue, and adorable special effects resulting in a much unintended camp value.
The Blob is not bad enough to file under Ed Wood hilarity nor is good enough to be entirely entertaining. I really wanted to enjoy this film more if only due to the historical relevance with respect to my favorite genre, but I felt less than thrilled as the credits rolled.
