Review of The Blob (1958) by Jon P — 14 Dec 2013
Harbouring thinly veiled views on communism and 50s paranoia, this shallow monster movie makes for a stellar example of obtuse propaganda. The titular giant red blob presents itself as the living embodiment of threat, which is fantastic, but The Blob's biggest problem presents itself in its blatancy of its message, which disturbs the film's potential to generate layers of meaning and to subvert through wit.
Literally the entire film acts as a euphemism for its 'hidden agenda', the verbosity of which quickly becomes exhausting, giving the impression of poor delivery and writing, which, in turn, leaves the whole thing feeling mind-numbingly stupid. In fact, even if you try to ignore the in-your-face politics (which is next to impossible) the movie even fails to entertain on a level of B-movie horror.
