This is several notches above your typical 30-year-old-teenagers-battle-stuffy-adults-and-a-monster-from-outer-space. Okay... so the special effects are pretty obvious, but it's imaginative as hell! The music and atmospheric color photography are surprisingly effective, and the humor, both intentional and not, works.
