Review of The Blob (1958) by Martin M — 05 Apr 2008
Considering the corny storyline, about a pulsating blob of red goo that arrives on the Earth in a meteorite, this is a pretty good movie, and once again one of the science-fiction classics of the 50's.
This film was Steve McQueen's first starring role, and is worth seeing for that simple fact alone. He delivers a typically great performance, though when he made this film he was 28 or so years old, rather than the 17 or 18 he's supposed to be, and it's interesting to see that he had already created his image, where he had to have a sharp, fast car and a beautiful girl at his side.
The movie is actually very well done. Check out the campy Burt Bacharach/Hal David theme song!
