Review of The Blob (1958) by Leif T — 18 Mar 2013
Welcome back to Super Scary Spring!
The Blob is one of those movies that's made poorly, but comes off as inspiring instead of cheesy. In fact, this and Equinox are two classic B-Movies that deserve more attention than they get in the long run.
The plot surrounds a gooey substance that falls to Earth and begins to attack a town. Only the young Steve McQueen character and his friends know about it. In horror fashion, nobody believes them. This costs the town some buildings because the blob attacks. So it's up to the entire town to work together and save the day.
The stop motion blob effects are great. They're oddly ahead of their time considering how low budget this film was. The acting is....well it doesn't fully detract from the film.
If you watch James Rolfe's videos you know about this film already. There's a celebration held yearly known as Blob-Fest. One of these days I would love to attend it. There are famous people, Movie screenings, and a reenactment of the famous theater sequence. On top of that a collector shows up with the actual Blob used in the movie. It sounds so cool.
If that wasn't enough to get you to see this, then the opening song will. It's so 50s that you just have to sing along.
I would recommend buying the Criterion edition of this film, which includes a poster. Check it out! You won't regret a thing!
