Review of The Black Stallion (1979) by Cassandra D — 20 Jun 2012
This series were my favorite books as a kid ... and when the movie was released I felt like I was a kid again. Although the movie isn't exactly faithful to the book, it's close enough and if the storyline has changed the spirit of the relationships have not.
The relationship, the great love, between Alec and The Black is beautifully shown, as well as the interesting relationship between Henry Daley and Alec. The kid who play Alec in the movie is significantly younger than the 14 year old he was in the book .
.. but despite that, Coppola makes the story work. The cinematography is magnificent and there's very little dialogue in the movie. This is a visual experience you can drown in and the score is perfect.
This is a movie for anyone of any age who loves horses. Kudos to the cinematography and the breathtaking natural beauty. I can forgive a lot when a movie is this gorgeous. Worth seeing more than once.
