Review of The Bishop's Wife (1947) by George N — 27 Jan 2009
We found this movie listed in the best Christmas movies of all time and hadn't really heard of it (perhaps we live a secluded lifestyle). We actually rather enjoyed it--the storyline was interesting and the acting was good, nothing significantly annoying to detract from the movie.
It left you feeling pretty good at the end, like most movies from that era will do. Negatives, I found Cary Grant's character to be a rather unlikeable fellow once you got to know him, willing to lord his powers over others.
I wasn't sure if his question to her at the end was really intended to get her or drive her back to her husband...hopefully not the former as it wouldn't be very "angel-like". Also never quite understood why he liked to walk in front of cars or consistently sneak up on people and scare them.
Other than those minor detractors though, we enjoyed the movie, at least 4 stars worth.
