Review of The Birth of a Nation (1915) by Indi V — 20 Jan 2010
Contains some famous firsts in cinema history, and it should be studied for that yes, but its also one of the most racist and shocking films you'll ever see. At times, I found the utter ridiculousness of the second half to be so unintentionally funny, I am half-convinced the film is a comedy.
I am not laughing at the racism in the film, but at how ridiculous some of the actions are and at how this is probably the only film where the Ku Klu Klan saves the day. How can you not laugh at that?
