Review of The Birth of a Nation (1915) by Jams G — 05 Mar 2011
Technically an achievement, it made the motion picture the most popular form of entertainment after its release. it was groundbreaking. what I noticed was the excellent use of editing, even though griffith used stationary cameras and many parts of the story unfolding are slow, the cuts between action sequences towards and at the end were well done and kept up a fast pace.
BUT the whole film is blatantly racist and this sucks most, if not all, of the oxygen out of the film. I would recommend this only for serious film fanatics only, as this is still a major milestone in film history.
about this era, the civil war still had a huge influence, and there had not yet been a 'world war'. so americans were still talking and thinking about the civil war. time moved much more slowly back then as you can imagine.
