Review of The Big Short (2015) by James H — 13 Jan 2017
The big short is a slow paced film that is hard to get immersed into because of all the fourth wall breaks and side scenes of explaining how parts of Wall Street work so it feels quite long winded despite its 140 minute run time.
I actually enjoyed the explanation scenes, I thought they were funny as well as insightful. The screenplay was dynamite and the cast all gave brilliant performances. Steve Carrell plays a very angry character and does a great job, Christian Bale is very awkward and different and he really loses himself in the role, Ryan Gosling is good but at times they try to make his character a bit too much like Jordan Bellfort in the Wolf of Wall Street with his narration, and Brad Pitt does a great job in his few scenes, he is very quiet and subdued.
The soundtrack was brilliant and Mckay's direction was mostly good and you can tell that this was true to the original story because Ryan Gosling reminds me every 20 minutes. I don't think I'd watch it again.
