Review of The Big Short (2015) by Late R — 14 Jul 2018
This is one of those films that I'm surprised got any traction at all, let alone that it did as well as it did because, boy, is the subject matter not something that could pass as traditionally exciting.
It just doesn't seem like something that would appeal to a wide audience, but McKay was obviously determined to make sure that it did. He does a crazy good job in the director's chair, injecting an impressive amount of zest into proceedings and delivers an incredibly fascinating, entertaining and smartly-written story about how the US housing market triggered a massive financial crisis back in '08 - how it happened, who saw it coming and how they sought to profit off of it.
The stellar cast has a huge role in the success too, playing their magnetic characters with superb dialogue to perfection (Carell and Gosling are outstanding). Everything comes together in a way that balances the light with the dark, and the technical side of things (that could be really boring, if done badly) with that which is going to hold your interest resulting in a great film that doesn't fail to engage.
