Review of The Big Red One (1980) by David G — 05 Aug 2009
It took me a good three or four sessions over the course of about a month to get through this because I found it to be quite a long-winded and often - but not always - unbearably dull slog, a non-stop montage of chatting, followed by a battle, then another chat, then another battle, and so on and so on.
More interesting scenes are thrown in towards the end such as the Bangalore Relay, the German infiltrator and the young boy liberated from the concentration camp but they only help a small amount. There's also a chronic lack of characters to care about - with the exception of Lee Marvin's veteran NCO and Mark Hamill's Griff you'll be hard pressed to consider any of these GI's anything but cannon fodder.
Well, at least there's one thing - if you've ever wanted to hear Luke Skywalker talk about playing with his pecker, this is the film for you!
