Review of The Big Kahuna (1999) by Andrew B — 17 Oct 2008
This one came out of nowhere. Spacey plays his role as a loudmouth salesman well, but Devito in his subdued role is superb. The film's characters are allowed to develop well and have fantastic and believable chemistry between the two of them.
The comparison of business and Christianity as religions is done subtly and insightfully. The film does have some shortcomings. The religious young salesman is perhaps too restrained in his role. The film's choice to include imaginative sequences that are far altered from it's quiet reality seems out of place.
And the choice to set the film's conclusion and a few other brief shots outside of the hotel suite that 95+ percent of it is set in hurts the immersiveness of the film. Still definitely worth a look, if you can find it.
