Review of The Big Kahuna (1999) by Matthew A — 11 Jul 2012
This movie is the definition of the Straw Man argument. There are some good speeches, but the movie is essentially a 1 hr and 30 min lecture directed at the audience. The main characters rail against the bad behavior of the new guy and give him unsolicited advice which he never seems to get, but this character seems merely to serve as the Straw Man that the writer built up and then proceeds to tear down.
"See this guy I just made up? He sucks. Don't act like him." We are repeatedly told throughout the movie. But there is no indication that this guy represents anything but an amalgamation of the writer's own pet peeves, and the ultimate impression is that the movie is an opportunity for the writer to unload on his own made up character.
Amazingly, he got some big stars to participate in his fantasy beat down.
