Review of The Big Heat (1953) by Darryl J — 11 Feb 2008
The most violent and brutal noir I've seen from it's time. Fritz Lang is a great director and he really knows how to create a specific world. It reminded me of Blue Velvet at times. He perfectly can go from a sunny, happy film to a seedy and terrifying underworld of murderers, thugs, and "barfly's".
The lead is great and we really get to see his inner turmoil at the things that happen to him. The standout is Gloria Grahame though. She's wowed me yet again in this movie(In a Lonely Place being the first). She brings this certain energy to the film that you don't even know it lacks until she pops up on screen.
There's a lot of underlying themes going on especially Ford's blatant recklessness and that and many other things is what makes this a classic that should be more famous than it is.
